The Ruminant Heritages

Fifty years ago, feminists around the world started organizing spreading a desire for disorder that shook everything to its core. Five decades later, we ask ourselves how we should receive their legacy? Can we question it, and why should we do so?

The filmmakers programmed in the 34th edition of the Barcelona International Women’s Film Festival seek to ruminate on all these legacies, chewing them over a second time, scratching out images and rewriting scripts that others penned years ago. They also, as if working with papier-mâché, rework the codes of 1970s feminist cinema. The hybridity between fiction and documentary is a constant, whether through documentary fiction or documentaries that end up becoming fiction. The home video format is harnessed and subverted; the film-zine emerges as a new aesthetic form; and feminist theory from decades past permeates all essayistic cinema The images are also slowly and collectively ruminated.

To digest a feminist legacy is to experiment with a common language across generations of activists, an ancient yet new language that allows us to understand one another and continue the dialogue, digesting all these lessons and constructing a new feminist filmic genealogy.

The Vol. The Vol. I of this 34th edition is composed of seven sections: Filmic Persistences, Barbara Hammer Retrospective and Family Sessions at the Filmoteca de Catalunya; Cinema Out of Place in Barcelona’s squares; Special Sessions at Santa Mònica, Zumzeig Cinecooperativa, Cinema’s Library and Pompeu Fabra University; Education and Mediation projects, and the MIFDB on Filmin.
